Until Dead
Mix’s debut novel is a legal political thriller set in Wyoming.
Ten years have passed since a Wyoming jury convicted Billy Ray Garza of four counts of Aggravated First Degree Murder and sentenced him to death. Now the trial judge has set Garza's date with the executioner, and his drug cartel friends have taken notice. In the meantime, the State legislature has embraced its territorial roots, reinstating hanging as the preferred method of capital punishment. Quinn O'Malley, Deputy Attorney General, will lead the way as Wyoming prepares to hang Garza. But can she defend hanging a man with such an antiquated execution method?
The cartel had decided it’s time to help Garza. As the days to the execution start to tick down, Quinn suspects that the head of the state prison system is on the take from the cartel and doing their bidding to protect Garza. When she discovers Garza's conviction may be fatally flawed by the fast and loose actions of a politically ambitious prosecutor, the road ahead becomes far more dangerous and bloodier than anyone had imagined.
It's a race across Wyoming's rugged terrain as the cartel targets Quinn, the woman with the know-how to send the condemned man to the the gallows and to disrupt the cartel's expanding western business routes. And Quinn herself grapples with a ghost returning to torment and haunt her--her little brother, dead by a suspicious hanging years earlier. For relief, Quinn turns to her friends and a new love. An elder on the Wind River Indian Reservation offers help in facing old demons.
But the cartel has other plans for Quinn. They are in close pursuit. As a brutal winter descends, will Quinn have the grit to stand up for justice and to fight for her own life, chased by an obsessed prison chief and a vicious drug cartel? Will the murderer hang by the new until dead?
